Boston Children’s Hospital is offering a weight-loss program for adults. The benefits are free housing, gourmet meals and up to $10,000.

The study is conducted by Framingham State University, Boston Children’s Hospital, Indiana University Bloomington, University of Alabama at Birmingham and Baylor University.

According to the website,


  • 18 to 50 years old
  • have a BMI between 27 and 40
  • interested in healthy weight loss
  • able to live (and work remotely if possible) full-time in a residential retreat for 13 weeks


  • Free Meals ProvidedAs a participant, you receive home meal deliveries for three months to help you lose 15 percent of your body weight.  This will be followed by a 13-week expense-free stay in a private room at a residential retreat with meals prepared by a professional chef. The purpose of the study is to examine if one diet is better than another for weight-loss maintenance.
  • Nutritional CounselingEnjoy one-on-one nutritional counseling to support your weight-loss journey. We will have scheduled appointments with weight-loss consultants to help you make the correct dietary decisions after you complete the study.
  • Personalized Health ReportAll participants will be provided a personalized health report including changes in body fat, lean mass, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. This valuable insight will help demonstrate the impact your diet is having on your body.

Do Negative Calorie Foods Really Exist?

Are you looking for foods that can cause you to lose weight just by eating them? Are there really negative foods? The answer is surprisingly yes. However, clarification is needed on the calories burned related to the consumption of the food.

Let’s use an example of a very low calorie food, celery. Just the digesting of celery does not burn enough calories to exceed the few calories contained in celery.

However, few people just pull off a stalk and start munching on it. Most consumers pull off the stalks, wash them, cut them in pieces, maybe sprinkle a little salt on it, chew on the stalk thoroughly, then finally digest it. When you add all this activity up, the calorie burn exceeds the calories consumed.

Think of other very low calorie foods, and the activities involved in preparation, such as cutting up cucumbers, or cutting up or tearing lettuce.

Of course, ice water is the purest (no pun intended) negative calorie food as it contains no calories whatsoever but your body burns calories digesting and warming the water.

Another food that falls into the zero calorie / negative calorie food category are shirataki noodles which are created from the  konjac yam. These noodles have an extremely low calorie count and when you consider the preparation calorie burn in addition to eating and digestion, the calories are eliminated.

Garcinia Cambogia – What’s the Connection to Weight Loss?

Garcinia cambogia is a yellow or green tropical fruit native to Indonesia, with purported weight loss effects.

Hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the principle constituent of the  rind of Garcinia cambogia, makes up about 10% to 50%. A study in 1998 reported that “Although hydroxycitric acid appears to be a promising experimental weight control agent, studies in humans are limited and results have been contradictory.”

In late 2012, Dr. Oz promoted Garcinia Cambogia extract as “an exciting breakthrough in natural weight loss”.

Consumers of hydroxycitric acid should be aware of the side effects. If 500 mg of hydroxycitric acid is consumed four times a day, it  can cause nausea, gastrointestinal discomfort, and headaches.
